The Importance of Using a Buffer PE Sheet in Ultrasonic Welding

In today's competitive market, appearances matter more than ever, and your reputation can hinge on the quality of your products. Ensuring consistently appealing and attractive parts is crucial. This is where the concept of using a buffer sheet in the ultrasonic welding process becomes vital.

What is a Buffer Sheet?

A buffer sheet is a thin film, similar to a sandwich bag or heavy-duty clear plastic wrap, placed between the ultrasonic machined tool (horn) and the part being welded. The buffer sheet material should differ from the parts being welded. For example, polyethylene film is commonly used with ABS plastic parts. While Mylar can also be used, it tends to be more expensive.

Benefits of Using a Buffer Sheet

The primary function of a buffer sheet is to provide a protective layer that prevents marking or damage to the part during the welding process. It helps to minimize the impact of mold imperfections or variations as the ultrasonic horn contacts the part. By filling voids due to contouring where the molded part does not perfectly align with the horn, the buffer sheet reduces marking caused by imperfections such as sinks, warpage, and other variations.

Suitable Applications

Many parts can benefit from using a buffer sheet during ultrasonic welding. High-cost internal electronics, personal electronics, medical devices, and automotive controls and instrumentation are prime candidates. Consumer goods with high appearance requirements, such as appliances, can also benefit significantly. When welding painted or decorated parts, a buffer sheet can help minimize the risk of marking these surfaces. Whenever superior quality and appearance are critical, incorporating a buffer sheet into the welding process is a smart choice.

Using a buffer sheet in ultrasonic welding is a simple yet effective way to enhance the quality and appearance of your products, ensuring they meet the high standards your customers expect.

Availability

This film is ideally manufactured at a thickness of   but custom thicknesses can be produced upon request to meet specific application requirements. The film is available in widths ranging from as narrow as 2 inches to as wide as 82 inches, depending on the application's needs.

Our  specialized film is highly suitable for applications using 20000 Hz (20KHz) of vibration frequency during their ultrasonic welding process of various forms of thermoplastics. Other grades of films are available for different levels of vibration frequencies.

Most common thermoplastics compatible with our film - Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polycarbonate (PC), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Nylon (PA), Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) and Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS).

PE buffer film or protective sheet is regarded as the best, most economical and highly recommended solution by experts for the problem of weld marks or flash marks on thermoplastics during the process of ultrasonic welding.

This film has excellent damping properties and thus can effectively absorb and dissipate the ultrasonic energy, preventing it from causing defects or marks on the welded product.

This film is popularly called a High Temperature Resistent protective film for industrial ultrasonic welding.
